Spring 2018 New
Dear BASD Community,
Blossoming flowers not only mark the start of spring but also indicate that we are drawing near to the end of this school year. Our planning efforts are well underway for next school year and I would like to share a few initiatives on our agenda.
We are always focused on school safety and continuously look to further secure our schools. The horrible shooting tragedy in Parkland, Florida caused all school districts to again look at current security practices with a critical eye. Our district maintains an All Hazards Plan, customized for each school. Additionally, we use a Standard Safety Response Protocol to make clear the procedures that should be followed at the school and class level in the event of an emergency. We also have a close working relationship with local police departments. You can read the safety update we provided to our board of education at the April Board Finance Committee here: BASD Safety and Security Update.
Our district is committed to Excellence through Equity with a goal of eliminating race and family income as predictors of school success. Equity means that each child receives what he/she needs to succeed when the support is needed. We are fortunate, through the support of our community, to offer a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities for our students. We want to make sure that all students have equitable access to the opportunities that spark their passion and purpose.
Our Reading by Grade 3 (RBG3) initiative is a critical part of our Excellence through Equity work. Research shows that when students are reading at or above grade level at the end of Grade 3, they are much more likely to find academic success through their middle and high school years. We are seeing outstanding early results in kindergarten as nearly 90% of all students are above or at grade level expectations by the end of the year.
The 2018-2019 school year will see the implementation of our new Digital Literacy special as well as the introduction of Spanish as a special for all students. Digital Literacy combines information literacy skills with technology literacy skills. Students will use basic research skills to answer questions and then present what they learn in a variety of ways including, writing, podcasts, videos and presentations.
Additionally, we continue to refine our high school College and Careers Pathways to help students make purposeful decisions when they select from the myriad of courses available to them.
Our website is a great resource for learning more about our district. I also encourage you to follow district updates on Twitter at @BethlehemAreaSD, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/basdschools/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/bethlehemareasd/.
Have a wonderful spring season and an enjoyable summer.
