- Dental Initiative
There are 3 main components of this
program:
Dental Hygiene classes are provided
for third grade classes.
Students from Donegan, Marvine, Freemansburg
and Fountain Hill who
need help with dental care are transported to Northampton
Community College for cleanings, fluoride treatments,
sealants and restorations.
With the addition of Heath Star II, a
mobile dental van dental, services are now being offered
to students across the district. This program is designed
to provide dental care to students who do not have dental
insurance and/or a dentist.
HealthStar II is a
dentist office on wheels. This van travels around the
school district providing on site dental exam, cleanings,
& restorations (filling cavities). Written parental
permission and a comprehensive health history is
required. Students who do not have a dentist or dental
insurance are eligible. The van is staffed by dentists,
dental hygienist & a dental assistant.
- Mobile Health Van - LHS, FHS, Northeast, and
Broughal
HealthStar I is a doctor's office on
wheels. HealthStar I visits Liberty, Freedom, Northeast, and Broughal.
Student are seen on the van with written parental
consent, for ill and well visits by appointment
established through the school nurse's office. Consents
are mailed home in August. Extra consents are available
in the nurses offices. This service is not intended to
replace student's private health care provider. Students
who do not have a private health care provider (doctor or
clinic) are encouraged to complete a consent. The van is
staffed by doctors, nurse practitioners and
nurses.
- Resource Room - LHS
The Mobile Van at Liberty demonstrated
a need for integrated health and social services. The
resource room opened in October of 1999. Participating
agencies provide support services to Liberty High School
students
These groups include but are not
limited to:
- Anger Management for Boys -
Conflict
- Anger Management for Girls -
RICHES
Consent to use this room and services
is obtained. Parents and
students from Liberty with questions are encouraged to
contact the school nurse at Liberty.
- Vision Initiative
A grant from the Pearle Vision
Foundation makes vision exams & eye glasses a reality
for many students of the Bethlehem Area School District.
Other vouchers are available through partnerships with
VIABL and NASN.
Students who can not afford eye exams
may be eligible for a voucher. This voucher is then
redeemed for an eye exam & glasses.
Parents who feel their child has a
vision concern should contact their school nurse.
- Asthma Initiative
Asthma is a major health concern
and the most frequent excuse for missed school
time.
