1999-2000
Course Description:
In English class this year, we will explore many types and elements of literature and will build your writing skills. We will be reading several short stories, classic novels, plays, and poems in order to better understand literature and writing styles. We will also study grammar and vocabulary as they relate to the literature and your writing. The ultimate goal is to expose you to the art of literature while strengthening your writing skills.
* Enter the room quietly and on time. Be seated and start journal or D.O.L. as soon as possible.
* Ask permission before touching anything. Respect the belongings of others.
* Be prepared with a pencil, your notebook, and book (when necessary).
* Listen when others speak. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized.

* Seek permission to get out of your seat (for pencil sharpener, etc.).
* Always do your OWN work; and always give 100%.

* Not turning in homework is NOT an option. Late assignments will be counted as follows: next period/day = 1/2 off; more than one day late = 0. (Penalties for projects and essays will be announced when assigned.)
*It is YOUR responsibility to show me any late work if you want credit. I will not come to you!!
* 3 homework misses will result in a warning card or call home.
* You may also be required to attend homework interest group or stay after school for make-up work.
When absent:
· It is your responsibility to make up any missed work due to absence. Find a reliable person from which you can copy notes. See me for handouts you may have missed. Also see the "Make-Up work" board. Any work not made up will become a zero.
* All students must keep a notebook. You will keep all necessary materials for this class in your notebook. If anyone finds it difficult to obtain a notebook, please see me.
* Notebook Requirements:
* Name and section on front cover
* All papers fastened securely
* Organize your papers in the order in which you receive them
* Organize into 3 sections:
2. Reading Log/Vocabulary Lists
3. Literature
* Notebooks will be graded throughout the year for organization!!
* A work folder that will hold all graded work will be kept in class. This will be sent home occasionally for parental examination.
* A writing folder which will hold all essays will be kept in class.
* Composition books which will hold your journal entries, D.O.L. lessons, and learning log will be kept in class. This will be examined occasionally for a grade.
* Your grade will be based upon the following:
Writing assignments
Projects
Homework
Notebooks
Reading Strategies (100 points)
* Your grade will be based on a point system. For example, there may be 600 possible points during one quarter. If you attain 480/600, you would compute 480 divided by 600 to determine your grade.
* Classroom Participation will be considered at the end of each quarter. It can "make you or break you."
Sincerely,
